Don't Take On a Wasp Nest Yourself
Paper wasps build the small honeycomb nests you see under eaves, pergolas and window frames. They're placid at a distance but defend the nest instantly — and most backyard stings happen during DIY removal attempts.
European wasps are a different level of risk: they nest in wall cavities, roof spaces and underground, with colonies that can number in the thousands. Blocking the entrance or spraying it triggers a mass defence — and can drive them through interior walls.
Professional removal means treating the nest at the right time of day, with products that reach the whole colony, wearing equipment that makes the job safe. Most nests are dealt with in a single visit.
Unlike bees, wasps sting repeatedly — and European wasps release alarm pheromones that call the rest of the nest to attack.

Wasp FAQ
Common Questions
What's the difference between paper wasps and European wasps?
Paper wasps are slender with long dangling legs and build small, open honeycomb nests under eaves. European wasps are stockier, bright yellow and black, nest in cavities or underground in colonies of thousands, and are far more aggressive when disturbed.
Can I knock down a small nest myself?
We'd advise against it. Even small paper wasp nests trigger an immediate defence, and supermarket sprays rarely kill the whole nest — survivors rebuild nearby, warier and harder to treat. For anything European wasp related, definitely don't: call a professional.
What time of year are wasps worst in Sydney?
Nests start small in spring and peak in late summer and autumn, when colonies are at maximum size and wasps get bolder around food and drinks. Treating a nest early in the season is quicker, safer and cheaper.
The nest is inside my wall — what should I do?
Whatever you do, don't block the entrance hole. Trapped European wasps will chew through plasterboard to find another way out — sometimes into the house. Keep the area clear and call us; cavity nests are treated through the entrance with dusts that reach the whole colony.
Will wasps come back to the same spot?
Wasps don't reuse old nests, but favourable spots — sheltered eaves, the same roof void — do get recolonised. We treat the area to deter re-nesting and point out what made the spot attractive.
